Overview

A recently deceased, workaholic lawyer is guided toward acceptance of his own death by a ferryman who runs a cozy teashop for souls passing on. A gentle, emotionally direct afterlife story, and a separate work from the author's other admitted series about a magical orphanage. Published in 2021, TJ Klune's standalone novel follows Wallace Price as he confronts the life he neglected while alive, spending his final days as a spirit at Charon's Crossing tea shop under the guidance of ferryman Hugo and his companions, before deciding how to face what comes after the shop's door. The novel continues Klune's pattern of pairing whimsical, found-family settings with direct emotional and grief-focused subject matter, following the commercial success of his earlier work and drawing a large readership within contemporary cozy and found-family fantasy circles. It is frequently discussed alongside that companion work as a defining example of the recent wave of low-stakes, comfort-oriented fantasy fiction centered on kindness and self-acceptance rather than conflict.
