Overview
Od Magic is a standalone fantasy novel by Patricia A. McKillip, published by Ace in 2005. Set in the city of Kelior, it follows the herbalist-turned-gardener Brenden Vetch, invited to work at the wizard school founded centuries earlier by the giant Od, whose magic operates under strict royal control that suppresses any untaught power outside its walls. When Brenden's own hidden magic is exposed, he becomes a fugitive, and the novel widens to follow the conflicted wizard Yar, a princess with concealed abilities, and a travelling performer, before revealing a masked student to be Od herself, returned to challenge the crown's restrictions on wild, untaught magic. The novel was a finalist for both the 2006 World Fantasy Award for Best Novel and the 2006 Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature, continuing McKillip's recurring interest in wizardry, institutions, and the tension between regulated and untaught power.
