Overview

A complete 1970s trilogy following Morgon, the riddle-loving Prince of Hed, as he unravels the mystery of three stars branded on his forehead. A foundational work of literary high fantasy, prized for its dense, allusive prose style. The trilogy opens with The Riddle-Master of Hed (1976), in which Morgon wins a dangerous riddle-contest against a cursed king's ghost and sets out, accompanied by the High One's harpist, to claim his promised bride while facing shape-shifting attackers and uncovering secrets about his own hidden power; Heir of Sea and Fire (1977) and Harpist in the Wind (1979) complete the arc. Patricia A. McKillip drew on Celtic mythology and riddle-game traditions for the trilogy's structure and texture. Locus's 1987 readers' poll of all-time best fantasy novels placed The Riddle-Master of Hed at 13th, and its 1998 poll of pre-1990 fantasy ranked it 22nd, reflecting sustained appreciation for the trilogy among genre readers.
