Overview
Patricia A. McKillip's debut novel (Atheneum, 1974): Sybel, a sorceress raised in isolation among a menagerie of legendary beasts, is drawn into a war of kingdoms when a baby is left in her care. A single, complete standalone novel, no sequels, no shared setting with McKillip's other admitted universe, Riddle-Master. Sybel's mountain isolation, inherited from her wizard father along with his collection of mythical creatures, ends when a man arrives with an infant for her to raise, drawing her gradually into love, political conflict, and magical war within the kingdom of Eldwold. The novel won the 1975 World Fantasy Award for Best Novel, was a finalist for the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award, and placed 13th in that year's Locus Poll for Best Novel. Critics praised its fairy-tale quality on release, with Publishers Weekly calling it "a magical moonlight fantasy" and Lester del Rey describing its storytelling as "inevitable but unexpected," and it is often cited as a standout of 1970s young-adult high fantasy.
