Overview
Ombria in Shadow is a standalone fantasy novel by Patricia A. McKillip, published by Ace in 2002. Set in the crumbling city-state of Ombria, where a ghostly, magical mirror-city exists in the shadow of the real one, the novel follows several characters caught in a succession crisis after the ruler's death: Lydea, the former ruler's mistress, forced to flee the castle; the regent Domina Pearl, who seizes power in the name of the child prince Kyel; the sorceress Faey and her apprentice Mag, drawn into the intrigue from below; and Ducon, the dead ruler's bastard nephew, trying to protect Kyel while the boundary between the two cities begins to give way. The novel won the 2003 World Fantasy Award for Best Novel and the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award, and has been read as a subversion of conventional good-versus-evil fantasy structure through its treatment of boundary-crossing between worlds.
