Overview
Roger Zelazny's A Night in the Lonesome October (1993) is a standalone Victorian horror-fantasy pastiche narrated by Snuff, a watchdog who is the familiar of a man doing very peculiar things around London. Over the thirty-one nights of October, a cast of "players" and "openers" drawn from Gothic and detective fiction -- a Great Detective and his companion, a mad monk, a cursed man who changes shape by moonlight, a vampire count -- assemble their own familiars and game pieces toward a ritual that will open, or keep permanently closed, a gate between worlds. Each of the book's thirty-one short chapters corresponds to one night of the month, a structural conceit Zelazny used deliberately so the novel could be read one chapter per night in real time through October. The novel is notable for narrating an ensemble of recognizable genre archetypes entirely through the eyes of their animal familiars, who conduct their own separate, largely cooperative or adversarial relationships apart from their human or otherwise masters' awareness, and it was Zelazny's final novel published before his death in 1995.
