Synopsis
A Night in the Lonesome October is narrated by Snuff, the watchdog companion of a man in Victorian London who is, though never named outright, understood to be Jack the Ripper. Structured as a diary running from the first through the thirty-first of October, the novel builds toward a night, once every few decades, when the moon is full on Halloween and the barrier between this world and the domain of the Great Old Ones grows dangerously thin. Snuff and his master are one pair among a gathering cast of Players drawn from gothic and horror tradition, including Dracula, Frankenstein's monster and its creator, the Wolf Man, Sherlock Holmes, a witch, a clergyman, and other occult figures, each accompanied by an unusually intelligent animal familiar.
