Synopsis
Raederle of An, promised by her father to whoever could win a riddle game with a ghost, sets out to find Morgon of Hed after he vanishes and is feared dead, his land-rule over Hed having passed uncertainly to his young heir in his absence. On her journey toward Erlenstar Mountain, accompanied by Lyra, heir to Herun, and by Morgon's own sister, she discovers her own hidden powers as a descendant of shapechangers and witches, powers that unsettle her even as they prove useful. Along the way she finds signs that Morgon may still be alive despite being hunted by dark forces, and must decide how far she is willing to go, and what parts of her own nature she is willing to embrace, to reach him.
