Greer Ilene Gilman is an American fantasy writer, born in 1951. She studied at Wellesley College and at the University of Cambridge, where she held a Vida Dutton Scudder Fellowship, and she worked for many years as a Harvard librarian. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her prose is dense and built from native English words, a style sometimes compared to that of Gerard Manley Hopkins, and she draws on North English and Scottish ballads and seasonal rituals to build a mythology around the seasons and constellations of Cloud, her fictional world. Her novella 'A Crowd of Bone' won the World Fantasy Award in 2004, and her collection Cloud & Ashes won the James Tiptree Jr. Award in 2009. She has also published poetry, short fiction and criticism, including an essay in The Cambridge Companion to Fantasy Literature.
