Synopsis
Ariane visits her friend Sylvie at midwinter, and the two women set out to revive a game from their childhood, the Nine Worlds, which they once invented together. Then Sylvie vanishes in a moonlit wood. Ariane follows her and falls into Cloud, a wintry, thorn-edged world they never imagined, where old ballads have become constellations and the moon hunts souls. The novel is written in dense language rooted in native English words, and draws on northern English and Scottish ballads and seasonal rituals. It follows Ariane's search through this mythic country, where the seasons, the stars and the old songs shape the lives of everyone in it.
