Karl Edward Wagner was an American writer, poet, editor, and publisher born December 12, 1945, in Knoxville, Tennessee, and died October 14, 1994, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, at age 48 from heart and liver failure connected to long-term alcoholism. He earned a history degree from Kenyon College in 1967 and an M.D. in psychiatry from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, later beginning doctoral study in neurobiology before abandoning medicine, disillusioned with the profession, to write full-time. Wagner is best remembered for creating Kane, an immortal warrior-sorcerer anti-hero drawing on the biblical Cain, across novels including Darkness Weaves (1970), Death Angel's Shadow (1973), Bloodstone (1975), and Dark Crusade (1976), works that helped define modern sword-and-sorcery fiction. He also wrote contemporary horror and collaborated with David Drake on the science fiction novel Killer (1985). As an editor, he oversaw The Year's Best Horror Stories anthology series for DAW Books from 1980 to 1994, produced an acclaimed three-volume restoration of Robert E. Howard's original Conan stories, and founded the Carcosa publishing house to preserve classic pulp-era horror. He won the British Fantasy Award twice, in 1977 and 1984, and the World Fantasy Award in 1983 for his novella Beyond Any Measure.
