Kate DiCamillo (born 1964) is an American author of children's fiction. Born in Philadelphia, she moved as a child to Clermont, Florida, where she grew up, and earned an English degree from the University of Florida before spending several years in entry-level jobs. In 1994 she moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she worked in a book warehouse while trying to get published. Her first accepted book, Because of Winn-Dixie (2000), was a Newbery Honor book and a critical and commercial success, and she then became a full-time writer. Her later novels include The Tiger Rising (2001), The Tale of Despereaux (2003), The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane (2006), The Magician's Elephant (2009) and Flora & Ulysses (2013), along with the Mercy Watson early-reader series. The Tale of Despereaux and Flora & Ulysses both won the Newbery Medal, making her one of only a handful of authors to have won it twice, and from 2014 to 2015 she served as the United States' National Ambassador for Young People's Literature.
