Synopsis

Flora Belle Buckman is ten, a self-declared cynic, and a devoted reader of the comic book The Illuminated Adventures of the Amazing Incandesto!, whose back pages, "Terrible Things Can Happen to You!", have taught her to expect the worst. Then a terrible thing happens next door: her neighbour's new Ulysses Super-Suction Multi-Terrain 2000X vacuum cleaner runs away with Mrs. Tickham and sucks up a squirrel. Flora rescues it, and the squirrel, bald in patches and renamed Ulysses after the machine that nearly killed him, turns out to have been born anew: he can lift the vacuum over his head, fly, understand everything Flora says, and, at her mother's typewriter, write poetry. Flora's romance-novelist mother wants the squirrel gone; Flora, her divorced father, a temporarily blind boy called William Spiver and the squirrel's rescuers form a small, odd alliance to save him, told partly in comic-strip panels.
