Kay Chronister is an American writer of dark fantasy and horror fiction who resides outside Philadelphia. Her short fiction has appeared in prominent genre venues including Strange Horizons, Clarkesworld, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, and The Dark. Her debut short story collection, Thin Places, was a finalist for the Shirley Jackson Award, establishing her early reputation as a distinctive voice in literary horror and dark fantasy. She followed this with the novel Desert Creatures, a genre-bending work blending Western and horror sensibilities. Her novel The Bog Wife became a national bestseller and has been praised by critics as a lush, beautifully written work with exquisite characterization, drawing favorable comparisons to Shirley Jackson and Karen Russell; the novel centers on a family bound by generations of an uncanny pact with the bog on their land, and explores inheritance, obligation, and the uncanny within domestic and rural settings. Chronister's fiction consistently returns to themes of folklore, ritual, and the porous boundary between the domestic and the monstrous, and her work has drawn nominations from both the Shirley Jackson and World Fantasy awards. She continues to publish short fiction alongside her novel-length work, building a body of work centered on American gothic and folk-horror traditions reimagined through a fantastical lens.
