Overview
The Bog Wife is Kay Chronister's debut novel, a standalone Appalachian gothic published in 2024. It follows the five adult children of the Haddesley family as their dying patriarch reveals the truth behind a generations-old bargain: the family's tenancy of their remote West Virginia estate depends on periodically offering a bride to the bog beneath it, drawn up as a strange, half-human wife. When the ritual falters and the patriarch dies without completing it, the siblings must decide whether to continue the pact, break it, or reckon with what it has already cost their family across generations. The novel folds folk-horror atmosphere and ecological unease into a story about inheritance, decay, and the debts a family passes down without ever naming them. It was named a finalist for the 2025 World Fantasy Award for Best Novel.
