Kazuo Ishiguro (born 8 November 1954 in Nagasaki, Japan) is a Japanese-born British novelist known for lyrical, restrained stories of memory, regret and the passage of time. His family moved to Britain in 1960, when he was five, after his father, an oceanographer, was invited to work at the National Institute of Oceanography, and he studied at the universities of Kent and East Anglia. His second novel, An Artist of the Floating World (1986), won the Whitbread Book of the Year Award, and The Remains of the Day (1989) won the Booker Prize; Never Let Me Go and Klara and the Sun followed, and both The Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go became acclaimed films. The Buried Giant (2015) is a fantasy set in seventh-century Britain. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2017 and knighted for services to literature in 2018.
