Lavie Tidhar

1 universe Last reviewed 2026-08-18

Lavie Tidhar was born on November 16, 1976, on Kibbutz Dalia in Israel's Northern District, and holds Israeli, South African, and British citizenship. He began traveling extensively from age fifteen, experiences that have shaped much of his fiction, and has lived in London since around 2013. Active as an author and editor since 2003, Tidhar writes across fantasy, science fiction, and slipstream, resisting easy genre categorization. His major novels include Osama (2011), an alternate-history thriller that won the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 2012, defeating works by Stephen King and George R.R. Martin; The Violent Century (2013); A Man Lies Dreaming (2014), which won the 2015 Jerwood Fiction Uncovered Prize; and Central Station (2016), a mosaic science fiction novel that won the 2017 John W. Campbell Memorial Award. He also created the steampunk Bookman Histories series and the historical/literary Maror Trilogy, alongside numerous short story collections. His novel The Escapement received a Philip K. Dick Award Special Citation in 2022, and his novel Adama won the Deutscher Krimi Preis in 2025. From 2019 to 2022 he co-wrote a science fiction and fantasy column for the Washington Post with Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and since 2023 he has also worked on animated film projects.
