Overview

Osama is a 2011 standalone alternate-history noir novel by Lavie Tidhar. In a world where the September 11th attacks and the wider decades of terrorism they set off never happened, a private detective named Joe is hired to track down the reclusive author of a series of pulp thrillers starring a vigilante-villain named Osama bin Laden. As Joe follows the trail from Vientiane to Paris to London, he begins encountering refugees from a war that, in his world, never occurred, and the line between the pulp fiction he is investigating and a suppressed, bleeding-through history grows increasingly unstable. The novel uses its noir-detective structure to interrogate how societies fictionalize and sanitize real violence, treating the pulp-thriller version of bin Laden as a symptom of a history everyone in Joe's world has managed to forget. Osama won the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 2012.
