Overview
Sour Cherry is a 2025 standalone gothic fantasy by Natalia Theodoridou, a queer retelling of the Bluebeard folk tale filtered through a chorus of townswomen recalling the story generations later. It follows a woman who marries a wealthy, charismatic widower in a remote village, only to discover that his previous wives did not simply disappear, and a son who grows up haunted by his mother's fate and his father's crimes. Narrated collectively by the women of the town looking back on events long after they happened, the novel foregrounds complicity and silence as much as the folk tale's more familiar horror, asking how a community comes to know, and choose not to know, what is happening in its midst. It was a nominee for the Nebula Award for Best Novel.
