M. A. R. Barker was a professor of Urdu and South Asian studies at the University of Minnesota during the 1970s, a period coinciding with the earliest formative years of the tabletop role-playing game hobby. His deep academic expertise in South Asian languages, religions, and cultures profoundly shaped his best-known creative achievement: the fantasy world of Tékumel, which he began developing as early as around 1940 and continued refining over several decades. Rather than following the largely European, Tolkien-influenced conventions common to fantasy worldbuilding of the era, Barker drew instead on Indian, Middle Eastern, Egyptian, and Central American mythology and culture to construct an unusually original and richly detailed secondary world. His "Thursday Night Groups," among the earliest sustained tabletop roleplaying campaigns, allowed him to develop Tékumel in granular, week-by-week detail long before it reached publication. Barker's tabletop game Empire of the Petal Throne was first self-published in 1974 and then professionally released by TSR in 1975 as a standalone game rather than a Dungeons & Dragons supplement, a notable distinction that underscored the depth and independence of his invented world. Barker also created multiple fully developed constructed languages for the setting, with Tsolyáni notably supported by a complete grammar, dictionary, and pronunciation recordings. He extended Tékumel into prose fiction beginning with the novel The Man of Gold, published by DAW Books in 1984, followed by further novels through 2004, cementing his legacy as one of the most academically rigorous and culturally distinctive worldbuilders in fantasy and gaming history.
