Overview
Tekumel is an elaborate secondary world originally developed by M.A.R. Barker decades before it reached print fiction, first as a setting for tabletop role-playing: Barker conceived it as a child and formalized it in the 1970s, self-publishing the Empire of the Petal Throne role-playing game in 1974 before TSR issued a revised edition the following year. The five novels set there, The Man of Gold (1984), Flamesong (1985), Prince of Skulls (2002), Lords of Tsamra (2003), and A Death of Kings (2003), follow different characters navigating the setting's dense, invented non-Western-inspired cultures, religions, and politics. The final three novels were published after Barker's death in 2000, from manuscripts he had already completed. A 2009 German magazine profile dubbed Tekumel "the forgotten Tolkien," and it remains far better known among tabletop role-playing enthusiasts than among fantasy-fiction readers, a genuine deep cut.
