M.R. Carey is the pen name of Mike Carey, born in Liverpool, England, in 1959. He studied English at St Peter's College, Oxford, and worked as a teacher for fifteen years before transitioning to a full-time writing career. Carey first made his name in comics, writing an acclaimed 75-issue run on Lucifer, a spin-off from Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, a 40-issue tenure on Hellblazer, the creator-owned series Crossing Midnight and The Unwritten, and a six-year stint on Marvel's X-Men: Legacy. Writing prose fiction as M.R. Carey, he authored The Devil You Know (2006) and its sequels in the urban fantasy Felix Castor series, before achieving wider acclaim with the post-apocalyptic novel The Girl with All the Gifts (2014), which he also adapted into a 2016 film, and its prequel The Boy on the Bridge (2017). Carey has described his younger self as "one of those ominously quiet kids" who "lived so much inside my own head." His career has spanned comics, novels, and screenplays, earning him an Inkpot Award for his contributions to comics and, in 2026, the Philip K. Dick Award, recognizing the enduring literary and speculative significance of his prose fiction.
