Synopsis
London's exorcists! I have a reward for all of you, a job for one of you, reads the newspaper advertisement summoning them to Brierley House. The ad is a baited hook, but it is a grand in hand just for turning up, and Felix Castor, short of work since the police stopped hiring him, goes in alongside the curdled cream of his dubious profession; once he is in, it is hard to get out again. Brierley House is the home of the Russian oligarch Gavril Ustinov, now missing, his driven daughter Ksenia and their staff of taciturn, sinister domestics, and it hosts an invisible force, seemingly centuries old, that attacks exorcists and negates their abilities. Ksenia wants Castor to find her father, alive or dead; Castor wants to know who set a trap for exorcists back in the late Middle Ages. A long novella, Castor's first appearance in fifteen years.
