Miyuki Miyabe was born December 23, 1960, in Koto-ku, Tokyo, to a seamstress mother and a father who worked on an assembly line. She graduated from Sumidagawa High School, attended business training school, and worked at a law office, where in 1984 she enrolled in writing classes through Kodansha's writing school. She made her literary debut in 1987 at age twenty-three with "Our Neighbour is a Criminal," which won the Japan Mystery Writers Association Prize and launched a prolific career spanning mystery, fantasy, science fiction, and historical fiction. Her acclaimed novels include All She Was Worth (Kasha, 1992), a mystery centered on a missing woman and identity theft that scholar Amanda Seaman called "a watershed moment in the history of women's detective fiction"; The Reason (Riyū, 1998), a multiple-perspective murder mystery; and Brave Story (2003), a fantasy novel following a boy who discovers a parallel world, which became one of her best-known works internationally. Miyabe has received Japan's major literary honors, including the Yamamoto Shūgorō Prize (1993), the Naoki Prize (1999), the Shiba Ryotaro Prize (2001), and the Yoshikawa Eiji Prize for Literature (2007); the English translation of Brave Story won the Mildred L. Batchelder Award in 2008. Her fiction frequently examines the effects of community breakdown and consumerism on contemporary Japanese society, blending genre storytelling with sharp social commentary.
