Overview
A standalone Japanese portal fantasy: Wataru Mitani, a Tokyo schoolboy whose family is falling apart, follows a doorway into the world of Vision in search of a power said to grant any wish. What he finds instead is a journey that forces him to grow up. Told he can change his own fate by gathering five gemstones and reaching the Tower of Destiny, Wataru instead discovers that his quest through Vision confronts him with consequences and choices he did not anticipate, reshaping how he understands his parents' divorce back home. Miyuki Miyabe's 2003 novel won the Mildred L. Batchelder Award in 2008, recognizing the quality of its English translation, and was adapted into a 2006 animated feature by Gonzo, released by Warner Bros. in Japan on a roughly one-billion-yen budget and nominated for Animation of the Year at the Japanese Academy Awards, with reviewers divided over its visual style but broadly positive about its faithfulness to the novel's emotional core.
