A quarantined boy, Tom, discovers that at midnight the hall clock strikes an impossible thirteen and the back door opens onto a magnificent Victorian garden that no longer exists by day. There he befriends Hatty, a lonely girl, and the two slip across the decades together until Tom learns that the elderly landlady upstairs is Hatty, grown old.
