Synopsis
Tom's Midnight Garden is a 1958 British children's fantasy novel by Philippa Pearce. Sent to stay with his aunt and uncle in their cramped flat while his brother recovers from measles at home, twelve-year-old Tom finds himself quarantined, bored, and increasingly restless within the walls of a converted Victorian mansion now hemmed in by modern development. Unable to sleep one night, he hears the building's communal grandfather clock strike an impossible thirteen and, investigating, finds that the back door now opens onto a sprawling, sunlit garden that has no business existing behind a block of flats. The garden vanishes again by morning, yet returns each night the clock strikes thirteen, drawing Tom back repeatedly into a vanished Victorian past where he befriends a lonely girl named Hatty, even as he begins to notice that his visits are not always reaching the same moment in time.
