Paul Biegel (1925-2006) was a Dutch author of children's books. He had hoped to become a pianist but decided he did not have enough talent, and turned instead to writing. Het sleutelkruid (1964), translated into English as The King of the Copper Mountains, was his third book and sealed his breakthrough as a writer. He went on to write many more books, among them De tuinen van Dorr and De soldatenmaker, his own favourites, and the Little Captain stories, as well as retellings of Grimm, Aesop, Reynard the Fox and the siege of Troy, and his work was translated into many languages. He lived in Amsterdam, and after his death his publishers reissued twenty of his best books as the Biegel library.
