Rachel Gillig is an American author born September 23, 1989, in California, who studied at the University of California, Davis, initially majoring in art history before switching to earn a Bachelor of Arts in literary theory and criticism. Before writing full-time, she worked as a preschool teacher and artist, and she began her professional writing career in 2022. She is known for the gothic fantasy Shepherd King duology, comprising One Dark Window (2022) and Two Twisted Crowns (2023), as well as the Stonewater Kingdom duology, which began with The Knight and the Moth (2025) and continues with The Knave and the Moon. Her work draws inspiration from folklore and folk ballads, and she has said she prefers writing duologies so that each pair of books reads as one long story with an intermission between them.
