Rafael Abalos Nuevo was born on October 12, 1956, in Archidona, Malaga, Spain. He studied law at the University of Granada and has practiced as an attorney since 1984 in Fuengirola, while also teaching at the University of Malaga's School of Legal Practice. He began publishing fiction in 2000 with Bufo sonador en la galaxia de la tristeza, followed by El visitante del laberinto (2001), both initially released by Editorial Debate and later reissued under Random House Mondadori's Montena imprint. His best-known work is Grimpow, el camino invisible (2005), a young adult fantasy novel that achieved extraordinary international success, selling more than 150,000 copies in Spanish and being translated into twenty-five languages; it received the El Publico Narrative Prize from Andalusian public broadcasting in 2005, was named a Notable Book of 2008 by the International Reading Association's Children's Book Award, and won the Dutch Youth Book Award in 2007.
