Rainbow Rowell was born February 24, 1973, in Nebraska and grew up in rural poverty without consistent access to electricity or running water; her mother fostered her love of reading while her father was often absent. She worked as a columnist and ad copywriter at the Omaha World-Herald from 1995 to 2012 before becoming a full-time novelist, having begun her debut novel, Attachments (2011), while employed at an advertising agency. She is best known for the young adult novels Eleanor & Park (2012), which received a Michael L. Printz Honor, Fangirl (2013), and Carry On (2015), all of which have appeared on major best-of-year and recommended-reading lists, with Carry On also featured on the Rainbow Book List for LGBTQIA+ content. She has written Marvel Comics runs of Runaways (2017-2021) and She-Hulk (2022-2024), and her recent adult fiction includes Slow Dance (2024), with Cherry Baby forthcoming in 2026.
