Randall Garrett (born Gordon Randall Phillip David Garrett, 16 December 1927, Lexington, Missouri; died 31 December 1987) was an American science fiction and fantasy author. He contributed to Astounding and other magazines in the 1950s and 1960s and wrote under many pseudonyms, including David Gordon and Alexander Blade. He is best known for the Lord Darcy series, set in an alternate world where a joint Anglo-French empire ruled by a Plantagenet dynasty survives into the twentieth century and magic has been scientifically codified; Lord Darcy is modelled on Sherlock Holmes. The series earned him a posthumous Sidewise Award for Alternate History in 1999. Garrett also collaborated with Robert Silverberg and, with his wife Vicki Ann Heydron, wrote the Gandalara Cycle. A viral infection in 1979 left him with severe amnesia, and he was hospitalized from 1981 until his death.
