Sangu Mandanna was born around 1987 or 1988 in Bengaluru, India, and moved to England at age eighteen. She studied English literature and creative writing at Lancaster University, graduating in 2010, and has been publishing fiction since 2012 across adult, young adult, and middle-grade genres, with particular success in fantasy romance and cozy fantasy. Her debut novel, The Lost Girl (2012), was a young adult dystopia, followed by The Celestial Trilogy (2018–2021), a science-fiction reimagining of the Mahabharata. She achieved wider popular acclaim with The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches (2022), an adult fantasy romance that appeared on the New York Times "Best Romance Novels of 2022" list and received a nomination for a widely recognized reader-voted award the same year, and with A Witch's Guide to Magical Innkeeping (2025), a cozy fantasy that reached number six on the New York Times paperback fiction bestseller list and was named to its 100 Notable Books of 2025. Her Kiki Kallira middle-grade series (2021–2022) incorporates Southeast Asian mythology, and her 2025 novel Vanya and the Wild Hunt features neurodivergent characters. Mandanna lives in Norwich, England, with her husband and three children.
