Shelley Parker-Chan
1 universe Last reviewed 2026-08-11
Shelley Parker-Chan was born in New Zealand to a Malaysian-Chinese mother and a white father and was raised in Adelaide, Australia, where they felt disconnected from their racial identity, having grown up, in their words, "in a very classically second-generation middle-class Asian way, but was definitely not perceived as Asian." Moving to Asia as a young adult exposed them to broader Asian representation. Parker-Chan completed graduate studies focused on war crimes and restorative justice, then worked as a diplomat for Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Timor-Leste, and later as an international development adviser on gender equality and LGBTQ rights in Indonesia. Their writing began with romantic fan fiction, driven by a desire for better queer representation, before they transitioned to novel writing. Their debut, She Who Became the Sun (2021), became a Sunday Times number-one bestseller translated into fifteen languages; its sequel, He Who Drowned the World (2023), completed The Radiant Emperor Duology. Parker-Chan won the 2022 Astounding Award for Best New Writer and the 2022 British Fantasy Awards' Robert Holdstock Award and Sydney J. Bounds Award, alongside multiple Hugo and Locus Award nominations. Non-binary and queer, they use they/them pronouns and now live in Melbourne with their spouse and daughter.
