Overview

Shelley Parker-Chan's The Radiant Emperor Duology (She Who Became the Sun, 2021; He Who Drowned the World, 2023) reimagines the rise of the founder of China's Ming dynasty through a gender-bent, queer lens, following a starving peasant girl who takes her dead brother's identity and his foretold destiny of greatness after a fortune-teller predicts nothing for her but oblivion. Structured around a small cast of rival claimants to power, including a eunuch general and a Mongol prince caught between empires, the duology traces a ruthless, morally compromised rise to power in which ambition and gender performance are treated as inseparable from one another. She Who Became the Sun won the Astounding Award and was shortlisted for the World Fantasy Award, and the completed duology has been widely discussed as one of the more acclaimed literary epic fantasies of the early 2020s for its handling of history, gender and power.
