Overview
An alternate early-20th-century Cairo where the mystic al-Jahiz reopened the boundary between worlds decades earlier, flooding Egypt with djinn, angels, and other supernatural entities; a fledgling Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities investigates the resulting crimes. The universe has grown from a single short story into a novella and then a full novel, following overlapping investigators through escalating cases in the same continuity: the novelette "A Dead Djinn in Cairo" (2016), the novella The Haunting of Tram Car 015 (2019), and the novel A Master of Djinn (2021). A Master of Djinn won the Nebula Award for Best Novel and the Ignyte and Compton Crook Awards, and was a finalist for the Hugo, World Fantasy, and Mythopoeic Awards, with reviewers praising its postcolonial imagination and richly detailed treatment of gender, class, and empire.
