Overview
Sean Russell's debut duology is set in the ancient Empire of Wa, a fantasy empire combining aspects of China and Japan, where plague and warfare have swept the land and the peace of the Empire is threatened. Its story is not so much about the Initiate Brother Shuyun, the young Botahist monk who serves as spiritual advisor to Lord Shonto, as about the whole Shonto household, sent away from the capital in a nominal promotion to face a very real danger from the barbarian tribes beyond the border. Quantum called the first book fantasy at its best, and Gatherer of Clouds received praise equal to it.
