Sean Thomas Russell, born on 30 January 1952 in Toronto, Ontario, is a Canadian writer of fantasy and, as S. Thomas Russell, of historical naval novels featuring the Royal Navy officer Charles Hayden. After university he moved to Vancouver and two years later to Vancouver Island, where he lives with his family and sails whenever he can. He knew from the age of ten that he wanted to be a writer, and names J. R. R. Tolkien as his chief influence. His first fantasy novel, the Asian-influenced The Initiate Brother (1991), opened a duology completed by Gatherer of Clouds; with DAW Books he went on to Moontide and Magic Rise, its prequel duology The River into Darkness, and the Swans' War trilogy. With Ian Dennis he co-wrote, as T. F. Banks, the Memoirs of a Bow Street Runner mysteries.
