Synopsis
The last of the world's great mages, the enigmatic Lord Eldrich, has dedicated his life to eradicating all remaining vestiges of magic in the world, for he must keep his knowledge of magic from falling into the wrong hands, lest it spell the end of the world. In a land where magic has been stamped out by the Church, except for the spells of Eldrich himself, Erasmus Flattery, who as a boy dwelt with Eldrich and is still haunted by the memories of what transpired during his stay with the mage, is drawn into the conflict against his will and finds himself in a life-threatening situation. The first half of The River into Darkness, a prequel to Moontide and Magic Rise set in the same world, published by DAW Books in 1997.
