Synopsis

It is the season of war. As the plum blossom winds herald spring in the Empire of Wa, the massive army of the Golden Khan is poised at the border. Lord Shonto, sent north as military governor of the province of Seh by an Emperor who meant him to fail, is forced to retreat south, caught between the pursuing barbarian hordes and his own hostile Emperor's Imperial Army; raising soldiers to save the empire would be called treason, and House Shonto must defend Wa against the Emperor's own allies before it is crushed by the invaders. There are hard choices and harder sacrifices, not only for Shonto but for Lady Nishima, Lord Komawara and the Jaku brothers, and it may fall to one young monk with extraordinary powers, Brother Shuyun, to save his empire. The conclusion of Sean Russell's duology, published by DAW Books in November 1992.
