Thomas Franklin Deitz was born on 17 January 1952 in Georgia and grew up in Young Harris, in the mountains of northern Georgia, which is the setting of most of his fantasy novels. He earned a bachelor's and a master's degree in medieval English from the University of Georgia, and has said the master's was the nearest thing to a degree in Tolkien. He published his first novel, Windmaster's Bane, in 1986. Besides novels he worked as an adjunct English teacher at Gainesville State College and other colleges, and became a tenure-track assistant professor there in 2008. He painted murals and fantasy art, collected model cars, took small parts in community drama, and was a founding member of the Barony of Bryn Madoc in the Society for Creative Anachronism. In 2007 he received the Phoenix Award at DeepSouthCon for his work in Southern fandom. He died on 27 April 2009, aged 57.
