Travis Baldree was born in 1977 in Nacogdoches, Texas, and grew up in Eden, Texas, before relocating to Colfax, Washington; he attended Washington State University before pursuing software engineering and game development. From 1998 onward he worked in the video game industry, co-founding Runic Games and Double Damage Games and designing notable titles including Torchlight (2009), Rebel Galaxy, and Fate. In the 2010s he transitioned to full-time audiobook narration, becoming an in-demand narrator who recorded all twelve entries of Will Wight's bestselling Cradle series, among many others. Beginning in 2021 he turned to writing novels, pioneering the "cozy fantasy" subgenre that blends fantastical settings with everyday, low-stakes comfort. His self-published debut, Legends & Lattes (2022), about an orc mercenary who retires to open a coffee shop, became a breakout hit, followed by the prequel Bookshops & Bonedust (2023), the short story Goblins & Greatcoats (2024), and the forthcoming Brigands & Breadknives (2025). Baldree won the 2023 Astounding Award for Best New Writer, received a 2023 Hugo Award nomination for Best Novel, won a 2025 Audie Award for fantasy audiobook narration, and has been nominated multiple times for the Washington State Book Award.
