Synopsis
Legends & Lattes, the first novel in Travis Baldree's cozy fantasy series, follows Viv, an orc mercenary who, after decades of adventuring, decides to retire from combat for good. Using treasure recovered from a final job, including a mysterious Scalvert's stone she quietly buries beneath the floor, Viv purchases a run-down former stable in the city of Thune and sets out to open the city's first coffee shop, a business concept entirely unfamiliar to its residents. She gradually assembles an unlikely staff, including a hob carpenter, a succubus barista, and a ratkin baker, all while learning trades she never needed as a warrior. Her new venture's growing success draws unwelcome attention, as her former mercenary colleague Fennus grows suspicious of her sudden prosperity and local criminal figures take notice of the thriving shop, testing whether Viv can hold on to the peaceful life she has built.

A 'cozy fantasy' series -- low-stakes, found-family stories following retired adventurers opening small businesses in the same world -- credited with helping define the cozy fantasy subgenre's contemporary popularity. Legends & Lattes (2022) was a finalist for BOTH the 2023 Hugo Award for Best Novel and the 2023 Nebula Award for Best Novel (both losses, no win) -- an unusually strong critical result for a debut cozy fantasy novel. Bookshops & Bonedust (2023) is a prequel (internal chronology precedes Legends & Lattes) and Brigands & Breadknives (2025) is its direct sequel; all 3 are registered by publication year rather than internal chronology, matching this project's standing preference (also applied to Roots of Chaos). A free short story, 'Goblins & Greatcoats,' was found but not researched to this project's sourcing standard (exact first-publication date and venue unconfirmed) and is not registered -- logged as a future Expanded Canon candidate.
