Synopsis
The story opens in Baoding in Qing-era China, where the renowned martial artist Yang Muying dies suddenly. Relatives suspect foul play, but when the coffin is opened it is empty. Under suspicion, Yang's wife, Yun Ziluo, leaves, and her seven-year-old son, Yang Hua, is taken away by a masked stranger. The boy's real father is Meng Yuanchao, Yun's former sweetheart, who left to avenge his master and later joins an anti-Qing rebel army. The tale follows the tangled loyalties and rivalries among these characters in the martial world.
