Chen Wentong (1924-2009), known by the pen name Liang Yusheng, was a Chinese-born Australian novelist and a pioneer of the 'new school' of wuxia fiction. Born in Mengshan County, Guangxi, he made his debut with Longhu Dou Jinghua in 1954 in the New Evening Post of Hong Kong. Between 1954 and 1983 he wrote 35 wuxia novels, most of them serialised in newspapers, among them the Tianshan series. He migrated to Australia in 1987, converted to Christianity in 1994, suffered a stroke in 2006, and died in Sydney on 22 January 2009. His work, together with that of Jin Yong, shaped the modern wuxia genre in Chinese-language popular fiction and is still widely read and adapted for film and television.
