Synopsis
Gypsum LaZelle, called Gyp, grows up in a Southern California household where magic is ordinary. Her mother and four siblings each develop a talent in their early teens, but Gyp does not, and she comes to accept that she takes after her non-magical father. Then, at twenty, her power finally arrives, and it is not the kind she hoped for: she can curse people. Learning to control it leads to scary and comic mistakes, and it forces her to look again at how her loving, gifted relatives have treated her and one another over the years. Gyp has to decide what to do with a gift that feels more like a burden than a reward.
