Synopsis

The third book in the series follows Laia as she works to defeat an ancient and vengeful Jinn unleashed by events of the previous novel, while Elias, having taken on the role of Soul Catcher, guides the spirits of the dead between worlds. Helene, still serving as the Empire's Blood Shrike, must navigate treacherous court politics under Emperor Marcus while trying to shield her sister and her own family from his cruelty. The three storylines interweave as old alliances are tested and new dangers, both human and supernatural, threaten to overwhelm the fragile balance the characters have managed to hold onto since the previous book.

Notes

  • From the series record (An Ember in the Ashes): The four-book main quartet set in the Martial Empire, following Laia and Elias/Elias's successor Helene across the whole arc; the primary reading unit and the work this universe is admitted for.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
