Synopsis

The fourth and concluding novel in the quartet picks up some months after the events of the previous book, as a long-imprisoned Jinn breaks free and begins wreaking havoc across the Empire. At the same time, the ruthless Commandant Keris Veturia has declared herself Empress and moves to hunt down anyone who defies her new rule, throwing the Empire into further chaos. Laia, Elias and Helene, their fates already deeply entangled from earlier books, must each find a way to respond to this new threat to the realm, drawing together the political, supernatural and personal conflicts that have driven the series from its start.

Notes

  • From the series record (An Ember in the Ashes): The four-book main quartet set in the Martial Empire, following Laia and Elias/Elias's successor Helene across the whole arc; the primary reading unit and the work this universe is admitted for.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series An Ember in the Ashes: position 4 of 4: previous A Reaper at the Gates (2018)
