Synopsis

A Snake Lies Waiting carries Guo Jing and Huang Rong's story further into the world of rival martial arts sects, as the couple continues to be shadowed by the ambitions of the Jin court and by factions competing over the secret manuals and techniques that have driven much of the story's conflict so far. Guo Jing, now more accomplished in the martial skills passed down by his mentors, and Huang Rong, whose cunning continues to guide their path through danger, find themselves entangled with the underworld of assassins and schemers associated with the Iron Palm sect and other rival clans. Political tension between the Song and Jin persists in the background, while personal betrayals and the fallout of earlier encounters on Peach Blossom Island continue to complicate the couple's relationship, as old enemies and new threats converge around them on their journey south.

Where it sits

  • Universe: The Condor Trilogy
  • Series: Legends of the Condor Heroes (English translation) core; position 3 of 4 in the series' recorded order
  • Author: Jin Yong

Notes

  • From the series record (Legends of the Condor Heroes (English translation)): Core Canon: the four-volume English translation (MacLehose Press, translated by Anna Holmwood, Gigi Chang, and Shelly Bryant) of the wuxia novel Jin Yong originally serialized in Hong Kong Commercial Daily from 1957-1959. This is the first novel of the wider Condor Trilogy; its two sequels (The Return of the Condor Heroes, The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber) are a separate continuity not yet catalogued and are a future candidate on their own merits.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
