Synopsis

A Storm of Swords, published in 2000, is the third novel in George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, set in Westeros. It resumes the War of the Five Kings shortly before the close of A Clash of Kings, with the Seven Kingdoms still consumed by claims to the Iron Throne. Robb Stark leads the northern armies but finds his position weakened after marrying for love rather than honoring an earlier betrothal, while Tyrion Lannister, forced into marriage to Sansa Stark by his father Tywin, navigates the politics of King's Landing. Sansa remains a captive within the Lannister court, while her sister Arya struggles to survive alone in the Riverlands trying to find her way home. Beyond the Wall, Jon Snow infiltrates the wildling forces, and Daenerys Targaryen continues gathering strength, her dragons growing and her ambitions turning west.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
